Nuit Blanche Guide: Exchange District

As part of Culture Days Manitoba, Nuit Blanche brings contemporary art to the streets of Winnipeg.

A bustling public art extravaganza, Nuit Blanche energizes our public spaces with art peppered throughout The Exchange District, The Forks, downtown, St. Boniface and the North and West Ends until the wee hours of the morning.

The Exchange District is delighted to be electrified as the nexus of this presentation of interactive, accessible art with nearly fifty Nuit Blanche installations.  We invite you to experience and explore the energy, connections and surprising art for one magical fall evening this Saturday, September 28th.

Our Nuit Blanche MUST SEE list:

LOOP> Loop is a cross between a music box, a zoetrope and a railway handcar. Working the hand-lever in tandem, Winnipeggers, young and old, will set the pace for these retro-futuristic machines, lighting up the cylinders and animating fairy-tales in Old Market Square. The images, tinted through a strobe effect, recall the earliest movies and are visible inside the cylinder as well as outside it, so that they can be watched from up close or far away. Created by Olivier Girouard, Jonathan Villeneuve and OttoblixProduced by Ekumen and Quartier des Spectacles, Montreal

CYCLE> Inspired by the revolutions of the sun and the moon, Cycle is an interactive installation that illuminates Bijou Park. The modules come to life as people transmit their energy to Cycle and transform it into a larger-than-life musical sequencer. Created by Serge Maheu. Produced by Illuminart, Montreal. Tour produced by Creos.

EYES> Filthy Luker and Pedro Estrellas turn their playful ideas into seriously large sculptures as some kind of personal vendetta against the mundane confines of the city in a heroic effort to make the world a brighter, more surreal place for us all. They are driven by their passion for innovative design, public art and mischievous intervention. Their EYES pop-up installations never fail to turn heads, raise smiles and create epic scenes that shifts the everyday towards the surreal, the sublime and often the downright ridiculous. Waterfront DriveCreated by Filthy Luker and Pedro Estellas (Luke Egan and Pete Hamilton).

ALLEZ-HOP> Inspired by all things that glow and the Fresh Prince, we present ALLEZ HOP, a pop-up, glow-in-the-dark basketball court. Think beautiful neon pink and the blue joy of the early 90’s, think uncannily old tunes and the swoosh of a net. As part of Illuminate the Night, we create a space for all to shoot hoops, play 3-on-3, spectate, chat, dance, and celebrate. Located at the parking lot near 129 Market AveCreated by Sasha Amaya and Thea Pedersen.
