The modern history of the Exchange District is marked by several waves of renewal and investment. It began in the 1970’s with the recognition of the area’s important and unique place in the history of North America as witnessed by its impressive collection of intact architecture from Winnipeg’s boom period of the late 19th and early 20th Century. Each wave was preceded by the development of a common vision and principles to guide the area’s future. In each case, area stakeholders from both the public and private sector, as well as the community that believed in its future, came together to create this vision.
In 2019, The Exchange District BIZ began a process in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg and several stakeholders to build on the Exchange District’s strengths and create a renewed cycle of vitality, investment, and sustainability. The result of this process is two major strategic documents with specific aims that will guide the future of the Exchange District in the years and decades to come.
Exchange District Plan 2022
Guided by community objectives and priorities, The Exchange District Plan 2022 was adopted by Winnipeg City Council in February of 2022 and will inform the City’s upcoming Downtown Secondary Plan.
Sustainable Neighbourhood Investment Strategy
Currently under development, the Exchange District Sustainable Neighbourhood Investment Strategy defines specific actions and investments to ensure the equitable, sustainable and economically robust transformation of the area into a complete community.
