Creative Quandary featuring artists Kathleen Black, Naomi Gerrard, Jayne Nixon and Deb Schmid Opening Reception: September 15, 7-10pm Additional Hours: September 16 to 27, 6pm: Tuesday to Friday, 12-6pm; Saturday, 12-5pm The “quandary” is present in every artwork we create. Four artists come together in this show to ask that question of themselves and the viewer. The process and the results are unique to each artist. Jayne Nixon asks- What direction is this process taking? Why am I doing this? Am I learning anything? Is this what I envisioned? How do I fulfill/accomplish what I envisioned? Naomi Gerrard asks herself similar questions- What is the message I’m trying to convey? What is it that excites me about this idea and what is the most effective artistic process to use that will catch the viewers imagination. Colour and its excitements and secrets and its voice interests me and how far can I go with it? Asian Sampler - D SchmidDeb Schmid also asks – Why we make the creative choices we do? Why each piece is always a puzzle that begs to be solved? What is it I am I attempting to achieve? How am I going to get there! What is triggering my creative side? What am I trying to communicate? Kathleen Black was fortunate to be allowed to draw and paint on walls as a child. She is comfortable in many meadiums – acrylic, oil, encaustic, fabric, glass, sculpture, and pate de verre. Her work expresses and insterest in time and mortality. Time of day, time of life, how little or great the time. Watch pieces are often embedded in her work to reflect this perplexity, and uncertainty of how much time!? The practical dilemma of existing. Each artists has their own process to work through- The results are colourful, wonderful and inventive. This particular exhibit will showcase: Naomi Gerrard’s ongoing grain and seed works influenced by the spring and summer prairie activities. Fabric and canvas works by Jayne Nixon, some inspired by her recent travels to Cornwall, England. Colourful mixed media works by Deb Schmid influenced by her recent travels to Asia and Vietnam. Winnipeg born Deb Schmid works out of her home studio in the Wolseley are. Schmid graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Fine Arts Honours Degree in 1983. Painting was her major and is still her primary focus. Multi-media, acrylic paint, found and gifted objects are her milieu. Kathleen Black Naomi GerrardGrowing up in the USA Naomi Gerrard graduated with a fine arts degree from the University of Minneapolis in 1980 concentrating on painting. She came to Manitoba that same year with her husband and their 3 children.
