Jazz Winnipeg is excited to announce its participation in Winnipeg’s 2022 Culture Days programming, with an expanded version of the 2021 pilot project PROJECT JAZZ.

A public art installation project newly expanded for Culture Days 2022, PROJECT JAZZ features ten projected onscreen moving images, brought to life by the innovative and creative energy of jazz. New visuals from filmmakers Freya Björg Olafson, Ervin Chartrand, Leigh Lugosi, Jason Wilkins + Scott Hadaller, and Joel Penner – inspired by music from Will Bonness, Raine Hamilton, Jon Gordon, Apollo Suns, and Onna Lou – join visuals by Leslie Supnet, Mike Maryniuk, and Hugh Conacher based on music from Derrick Gardner, Jocelyn Gould, Richard Moody, and Casati.

PROJECT JAZZ uses public outdoor spaces in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District as projection surfaces, creating an immersive multimedia experience. Centred primarily around Old Market Square, this installation is free to experience as part of Culture Days programming from 7:30pm until 11pm on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8.

The project combines dynamic in-person visuals with digitally produced works and online artist information to add context and depth to the viewer’s experience.

The public art project was originally conceived in 2020 as a means of bringing together the diverse talents of visual and musical artists, to be inspired by each other and project that process back into a public space in a safe and inspiring way.

“We’re thrilled to bring back PROJECT JAZZ for its second year as part of Winnipeg’s Culture Days celebration and expand this project to include more Manitoba filmmakers and musicians,” said PROJECT JAZZ executive producer, Angela Heck. “Bringing this series of installations to the Exchange District highlights its unique architecture and history while bringing Old Market Square to life with film. Adding the digital background provides more context and insight into the talent on display and highlights the rich history and diversity of the artists who are featured.”

PROJECT JAZZ is made possible with support from The Canada Council for the Arts and the Winnipeg Foundation. The project is produced by Jazz Winnipeg with technical direction and projection design by Hugh Conacher.
