NEW! Call for Community Participation
Please join us for the next community meeting to introduce an upcoming arts project produced by Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery titled “A Place Between: A 60’s Scoop Arts Project”.
Information of Community Participation to this project will be presented at this meeting. If you wish to bring your artistic expression and voice to the project, this is a call for participation as well. So don’t miss it! Snacks and beverages will be served.
ALL PUBLIC WELCOME!!!
We are inviting dialogue with the public about this community issue of 60’s Scoop Survivors and children placed in care and are creating an arts initiative that includes twenty-four contemporary Indigenous artists who will be producing visual artworks, public art, performances, writing and films, in which they all describe a myriad of experiences of being forcibly removed from one’s family and to discuss the healing supports for such an experience. Our project scheduled to take place April 7 to May 6, 2017 and we are encouraging feedback about the project and issues we are discussing between now and the project kick off dates.
“A Place Between: A 60’s Scoop Arts Project” will feature twenty-four contemporary Indigenous artists who have produced artworks, performances, writing, and films, in which they each describe a myriad of experiences on being adoptee out or placed in care.
The Urban Shaman Gallery has also commissioned new works by Scott Benesiinaabandan, Tasha Hubbard, George Littlechild, and Jessica McMann-Sparvier to be included in a group exhibition at the same time.
With the recognition that dealing with the 60’s Scoop is a move towards healing and reconciliation, and as the first and largest group exhibition on the 60’s Scoop in Canada, the Urban Shaman Gallery is cognizant that here in Winnipeg there is a need to socially engage and involve the community. This meeting is a number of community conversations taking place prior to the Project’s opening.
For more information and to arrange interviews please contact Director, Daina Warren at daina@urbanshaman.org and Project Coordinator, Janell Henry at aplacebetween2017@gmail.com or please call the gallery at 204-942-2674.
Please pass on our info about the project to your community.
