Historic Walking Tours

We're now booking group tours for spring and summer 2008!

Steeped in history, the Exchange District National Historic Site holds Winnipeg's deepest and darkest secrets. Knowledgeable and dynamic tour guides examine legends of power, corruption and heroism while you enjoy an exceptional collection of architecture. A must-see for any visitor to Winnipeg!

For groups of ten or more participants, the BIZ will arrange a tour on the theme of your choice and on your time. Contact us for details and rates.

 

Green Buildings and Sustainable Land Uses: New in 2008!

Often thought of as an area known exclusively for the architecture reflecting days gone by, the Exchange District is home to some of the most forward-thinking and innovative "green buildings" in Canada, such as the award-winning Red River College Princess Street Campus. Sustainable city planning, alternative transportation and energy conservation will also be covered.

The East and West Exchange District Tours

These tours, which are approximately 1 1/2 hours in duration, depart daily, the East Exchange Tour at 10am and the West Exchange Tour at 2pm.

Adult $6

Specialty Theme Tours

In-depth tours focusing on specific aspects of District history. These tours depart from Old Market Square at 12:00pm and are a great way to spend your lunch hour.

Tours are approximately 45 minutes in duration.

Mondays - Banker's Row
At one time there were twenty bank buildings lining Main Street between City Hall and Portage Avenue. This tour visits nine of the remaining buildings including the Union Bank, Canadian Bank of Commerce, and the Bank of Montreal.

Tuesdays - Winnipeg Grain Exchange
Highlights the creative integration of historic and modern architecture at Red River College Princess Street Campus. Explores the history of the world-renowned Grain Exchange association, influence of the Market Building, and Farmer's Row.

Wednesdays - Newspaper Row
The corner of Albert & McDermot was once known as Newspaper Row. Stories of fierce competition between the city's early papers make for a fascinating tour.

Thursdays - Theatre District
Winnipeg's vibrant arts scene dates back to the early 1900s. Learn to "fringe" as you explore unique theatres and their history. Highlights include Cinematheque, John Hirsch Place, MTC and a full interior stop at Pantages Playhouse.

Fridays - Winnipeg General Strike
The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was the longest and most violent labour conflict to occur in North America at the time. Learn about the experiences of the strikers as they strived for equality and fair conditions, from the halt of production citywide to the tragic events of Bloody Saturday.

Where do we meet?

Exchange District Historic Walking Tours depart from Old Market Square which is located in the heart of the Exchange at the corner of King and Bannatyne. Look for our Historic Walking Tour signs between Market Stage and the Glass Onion Cafe.
